Tour Descrizione

We will start our tour of the Ionian wonders with an exciting boat ride to discover the Marine Protected Area Capo Colonna, with its very low backdrops, which distinguish by the other deeper Calabrian coasts.

This area was established in 1991 and includes 8 promontories ranging from Capo Colonna to Le Castella. The seabed is populated by different varieties of fish, some of which are tropical fish, like the parrot fish, by the Posidonea, a typical plant of the Mediterranean Sea. During the boat trip we will stop to swim and we will have an aperitif with typical products and seasonal fruit. As soon as we return to shore you will visit the village of Isola di Capo Rizzuto and finally the Aragonese Fortress, a symbol not only of the territory but also of Calabria all over the world. It was built in the 15th century, on a former Greek settlement connected to the coast by a narrow strip of land to give refuge to soldiers, who fought invaders from the sea. Its structure is characterized by the typical Aragonese architecture, in which you recognize quadrangular ramparts with mighty walls.

We will leave this stretch of coast to go to the Archaeological Park of Capo Colonna, which since ancient times has represented a safe landing place from the fury of the sea. Symbol of the territory is a column that stands alone on the promontory, in memory of the maximum flowering of the Shrine of Hera Licinae. We visit the site and the museum, before proceeding towards the last stage of the day: the Castle of Charles V in Crotone. The fortress stands above an ancient Greek acropolis, it controlled on one side the coast and on the other side the country. It was substantially modified by Charles V, according to the new criteria of fortification that made it one of the most powerful military fortresses in Italy.

Dinner and overnight at the chosen structure.

On the second day, after breakfast, we leave for Santa Severina to visit the best preserved castle of Southern Italy. It was built in 1076 by Robert Guiscard at the top of a summit, to control the surrounding area, it was given the present appearance by the Angioins: a quadrangular mastium and four cylindrical towers with bastions to support. The history of this castle is interwoven with that of the Carafa family, who took possession of the castle for several years. Today, the Castle houses a Museum of Contemporary Art. We leave this wonderful castle to head towards our next destination: Caccuri. You can admire a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys, which form the historic centre, as it was in the past. On the top of the hill there is the castle with its very particular shape, which reminds a bow of a ship. After visiting the castle we will head towards the ghost village of Acerenthia, steeped in mystery and history, abandoned during the 19th century. It is a little known place of this province but with high emotional value.

We stop for lunch and then we head for Cirò. Here we visit the castle first, it was built to control either the town or to defend itself from enemies; then the Saracen Markets, built in the 18th century to host a fair in the early days of May. Today in the monumental square take place several events of various kind; and to end a tasting at one of the renowned wineries in all the region. Overnight in Cariati.

The last morning we will visit the old town of Cariati, a magnificent medieval village, where we will access form the Porta Pia, then a little stop at the Brezia Tomb, dating back to the 4th century BC. It belonged to a warrior and inside are depicted scenes of his life, still intact. After admiring this tomb, we will go to the Sila National Park, more precisely to Campana to admire two megalithic sculptures, on which several theories have been hypothesized on their age. After lunch there is a stop in the park, you can choose to make excursions or just relax.

The tour will end here, where the participants are free to choose whether head back to the starting place or carry on with another tour.
