The tour around the Ciociaria region takes two days. We go in the beautiful and mostly pristine landscape of the province of Frosinone. We start visiting the karst area of the Collepardo’s Caves and the Antullo Well, then an acropolis up on a very well preserved hill, We end the visit at the Castle of Fumone. In the evening we go to Cassino and the day after we to the Montecassino Abbey and its museum. We spend the afternoon in the name of fun and relaxation.
Once we arrive in the province of Frosinone, our first stop will be at the Collepardo’s Caves, result of karst features due to underground erosion of the water, and the Antullo well, created by the collapse of the ceiling of a cave. It is the largest well in Europe, who reminds us of the Latomie in Syracuse. At the end of the visit, we go to Alatri, where we will have lunch and discover a very well-preserved acropolis, with its walls, which dates back to the Ist century BC, the monuments of the historical centre and the Jewish neighbourhood. Last stop of the first day is the Castle of Fumone, since at least the time of the Romans it was a town, on the Via Latina played an important role for the communication, then the fortress was used by the popes as a political prisoners’ jail. When we go out of the castle we go to Cassino, where we’ll have dinner. Our accommodation is in an agritourism to appreciate the flavours of the typical local products of Ciociaria.
The second day, after breakfast, we visit the Montecassino Abbey, built in 529 on a temple dedicated to God Apollo by the will of Saint Benedict of Norcia. Since it was erected it suffered several lootings, devastations and earthquakes, which signed its history, and not least, a bombing during the Second World War. Together with a tour guide we visit the cloister, the basilica and the ancient area of the monastery. Once we finish the visit, we’ll have lunch and then we head towards the station, where we’ll have the chance to go into the nature for a rafting trip on the Gari River. Then we’ll relax having a bath in the spa waters of the Varrone Baths, a thermal park arose near the villa of Marco Terenzio Varrone, immersed in lush vegetation, with the fronds of the weeping willows that fall over the streams.
The tour will end here, you are free to choose whether head back to the starting place or carry on with another tour.
Thanks to this tour we will discover a little touristy area of this region, in which we will be immersed in some of the places of the Second World War. We will visit places full of spirituality, populated by ancient civilizations that have given life to several legends, we will taste the typical products and venture on the river Gari to go rafting and we will abandon to the waters of the Baths of Varrone to enjoy the end of the itinerary.
