The morning will begin visiting the Archaeological Park of Sibari, a colony founded by the Achaeans, it was chosen for the fertility of its territories, thanks to which it quickly became the richest, the most famous and powerful colony of the Magna Graecia. This lead to a strong rivalry with Kroton, that in 510 BC razed it to the ground. Through the help of Pericles the city was refounded and it escaped the attacks of Taranto first and Syracuse then, it became in 84 BC a Roman municipality. Today we can admire the remains of the walls of the ancient flourishing city with their North Gate, the theatre, a large domus, the thermal building and two large streets. Leaving the park we will head towards Corigliano Calabro, to visit the Castle, built in the 11th century by the Normans during their campaigns in Calabria and Sicily. The castle was used to keep under control the Plane of Sibari. Today we can admire, although with several restructuring and accommodations depending on the families who lived there. Its conformation was given by the Aragonese domination, which follows (like all the castles that were built at that time in Southern Italy) the features of the New Castle in Naples: a central tower with four corner towers. We will go back to the Ionian coast to visit and appreciate one of the best Calabrian excellences, the Liquorice museum “G. Amarelli” in Rossano Calabro. Inside the museum bewitched by a heady scent of liquorice, we will know the secrets of the past and present processing, roots extraction plants.
The day will end with a little relaxation immersed in the artificial pool created along the river Coserie, called the Vurga in Cropalati. You will find yourself immersed in fresh and crystalline waters in the shade of lush trees. At the end of the day you can choose to return to Cosenza or continue with an other tour.
Starting from a colony of Magna Graecia among the most prolific ones, we will go to the town from where the greatest number of emigrants left to seek their fortune abroad, then we will visit a liquorice museum and we will finish by diving into the artificial pool of a stream.
