Tour Descrizione

Our tour will begin in the splendid city of Soverato, in the Squillace golf, which every year attracts many Calabrian tourists, and not to pass the summer holidays.

We will begin by visiting old Soverato and its ruins, and after that we will take a break on the marvellous beach of Soverato marine. After lunch we will visit the Grangia di Montauro, built between the end of the 11th and beginning of the 13th century. A fortress protected by a drawbridge put under pressure by the Saracen invasions. From Grangia, we will wonder along a path and admire windmills left almost untouched, up till Gasperina. In the late afternoon we will settle into the hostels and dine.

The second day we will visit Santa Maria del Mare (Saint Mary of the Sea), in the lower half of the Byzantine Castrum. A small church with a single nave which, even with the multiple restructurings, still resembles the Norman-Byzantine Santa Maria della Roccella (Saint Mary of Roccella) basilica. Carrying onto the Vasche di Cassiodoro (Cassiodoro’s Baths), made into granite rock and used as fish farms.

The third stop for the morning will be at Castello di Squillace (Squillace’s Castle), built in 1044 and looks over the city from up on the mount. After some archeology digs, it was discovered that the castle was built upon a roman-greek necropolis of the 8th century. Founded by the Greeks and colony of the Magna Grecia, named Skylletion and renamed Scolacium once it became a roman colony. We will then visit the Archeology Park, where there are remains of paved roads, a basilica, aqueducts, mausoleums, baths and a theatre. At this site, every year, MARCA organises events where both Italian and international artists perform.

We will then carry on and visit the Parco della Biodiversità (Biodiversity Park) at Catanzaro, where an old farm has been restructured and thanks to the remodelling of the surrounding landscape a new ecosystem has been created which houses hundreds of plant and animal species. The park has inbuilt sporting areas and footing and mountain bike paths. At the end of the tour we will have dinner and allocate rooms.

The following day we will go to the Cascate Campanaro (Campanaro Waterfalls), inside the Riserva regionale Delle Valli Cupe (Gloomy Valley Regional Reserve). At a height of 22 metres, an unpolluted area surrounded by equatorial plants. Based on requests we can go on foot, horseback or donkey-back. We will then have lunch and transfer to the eco-sensorial park Orme nel Parco, where all five of your senses will be tickled to give you an all rounded experience.

The tour will end here, where the participants are free to choose whether head back to the starting place or carry on with another tour.
