Tour Dettagli

Your arrival will be in Avezzano in the evening, by public transport. There will be a shuttle service from the station to the bed and breakfast.

On the second day we visit the excavations carried out at Il Tesoro, in the archaeological site of Lucus Angitiae, in the town of Luco dei Marsi. The works brought to light the remains of a temple of Italic Age and one of Augustan Age, Doric columns, burial and numerous other materials such as coins and bas-relief sculptures.

After the visit we will head through a mountain path to the Tunnels of Claudio, built between 42 and 51 AD on the first drainage attempt of the Lake Fucino. They constitute the access to the underground tunnel, almost 6-kilometer-long, it was the longest tunnel ever built since ancient times until the inauguration of the Fréjus Rail Tunnel in 1871.

On the third day we visit the Aia dei Musei, a museum consisting of two exhibition sections: the first called “Le Parole della Pietra” (“The Words of the Stone”), that houses a 100 gravestones and inscriptions from the Roman Age to the Renaissance, and the second section called “Il Filo dell’Acqua” (“The Thread of the Water”), an exhibition space dedicated to the drainage of the Lake Fucino. After visiting the museum you will continue in the knowledge of the history of this fabulous territory rich in history and legends through one of the most important visit of this tour, that is the visit to the archaeological site of Alba Fucens.

On the fourth day we go to Celano, the second most populous center of the Marsica territory, lying on the foot of the Mount Tino. Part of its territory is included in the Regional Natural Park Sirente-Velino. On the historical center of Celano stands the Piccolomini Castle, renovated after the earthquake of 1915 and the bombing of the Second World War. Today you can visit it and from there you can enjoy the panorama. The castle hosts the museum of sacred art of the Marsica territory and the Torlonia Collection, consisting of 184 objects and 344 Roman bronze coins, all these works that came to light during the drainage of the Lake Fucino in the second half of 19th century by Alessandro Torlonia. From here we venture into the natural canyon called Le gole (The Ravins), a real canyon dug for about four kilometers from the river La foce, that separates the massif of Mount Sirente from the Mount Tino, also called Serra di Celano. A creek near the pine forest, almost at the end of the path, leads to the Source of Lovers, a small and picturesque waterfall. Luco dei Marsi is a village of about 6.000 inhabitants that rises on the southern side of the basin of Fucino, on the slopes of Mount Penna not far from the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, in the province of L’Aquila.

The guide will show us the old town and the main churches, including St John Baptist. After lunch we will admire in the northeast part of the town the Vicus Amplero, dating back to 302 BC and, of particular interest are the witnesses of fortified centers dating back to the 4th and 3rd centuries BC and the necropolis found in the district of La Giostra, in the small valley of Cantone, between Amplero and the Plain of the Fucino.

On the fifth day you will enjoy a day of freedom to organize at your own pleasure. In the evening there will be a dinner to greet us in view of the departure.

The green mountains of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise host a variety of plants and animal species. The raids in the villages of the Marsica territory of bears, wild boars and foxes are very frequent. This territory is not only nature and landscapes, but it is rich in history, it was the land of Marsi people, a population of mercenaries, who had joined Rome in many military expeditions, so much that they became fundamental for the Empire.
