Tour Descrizione

Our tour in the Murge Territory starts from Castel del Monte. The fortress, built on a hill, is the most representative work of Frederick II will. The concept of art at the service of power is well expressed in this castle. In 1996 it was included in the UNESCO list and it is depicted on the reserve of the 1 cent Euro coin.

The second stop of the day is at Lamalunga Caves. This place is known because, among narrow tunnels and karstic cavities, the remains of a man from about 187.000 years ago were found.

We head to Altamura to taste the famous bread, which has been awarded the PDO mark. After lunch we visit the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, a wonderful example of Apulian Romanesque wanted by Frederick II, of which the northern portal and two original bell towers are still preserved.

Have you ever seen dinosaur footprints? On the way to Santeremo in Colle we stop to fantasize about the animals, which have inhabited this territory many centuries ago.

Once arrived in Santeremo in Colle we check-in and then we meet for dinner.

The second day we visit Palazzo Marchesale, fine example of 16th century building, with its impressive and linear appearance.

We move to Gioia del Colle and visit the Archaeological Park of Monte Sannace to see the ruins of the Peuceti town, a population who inhabited the central Murge Territory during the 10th century b.C. The finds found here are currently cherished by the National Archaeological Museum, housed at the Norman Castle, which is the next stop of our tour, after lunch. The castle preserves traces of the eras of its life: Byzantine, Norman and Suevian, its architectural structure and also the additions made over the centuries are intact.

We check-in and then we meet to go to a wine tasting of the Gioia del Colle Primitivo red wine in a cellar.

We dedicate the morning of the third day to the Murge Territory underground, visiting the Trullo Cave in Putignano. In Apulia it was the first karstic cave opened to the public, thanks to its wonderful shimmering effects. If you will be here during the Carnival period you will have the chance to watch the parade of floats of the oldest Carnival in Europe, born in 1394. We continue on towards Castellana Grotte, a town with a medieval urban layout, with narrow and stony streets. After the discovery of the caves in 1938 the town attracts thousand of tourists due to their stalagmites, which provoke adults and children fantasy.

We stop for lunch and then we continue our journey in the Murge Territory, going to Conversano, where we check-in and visit the castle. It is located at the highest point of the city, looking out over the surrounding territory till the sea. In its imposing structure is easy to recognize the late baroque signs, when it belonged to the Acquaviva family, who last inhabited it.

We finish our tour in Rutigliano. On our way to the Terracotta Whistle Museum you can admire the inestimable historical, artistic and architectural heritage of the city. We focus particularly on the remains of the castle and towers, which still stand out among the houses. At the museum, established in 2004, over 700 whistles are exposed. You will be amazed at their shapes and colours. If you liked them, you can buy some in the shops of Rutigliano.

Our tour will end here, where you are free to choose whether head back to the starting place or carry on with another tour.
