First destination of our trip will be some treasures safeguarded in the Park of Veio: the Shrine dedicated to the goddess Minerva, played a key role in marking the milestones in the lives of the aristocrats of that time; the Villa of Livia, from which a cycle of frescoes of higher value has been recovered, today conserved at Palazzo Massimo; the Arch of Malborghetto, where the emperor Constantine encamped with his army on October, 27 312. At the sunset he saw a cross on the horizon and during his sleep he was warned to mark their shields with the same sign. The next day at Saxa Rubra he defeated the army of Maxentius.
From here we will continue our journey towards the Abbey of Farfa, where was home one of the most important fairs of the European Middle Ages. We will have the chance to be housed in the monastic guesthouse, where we will spend the night, but only after visiting the abbey, which in the 8th century, thanks to Charlemagne, enjoyed autonomy from all civil and religious authorities. A visit to the Abbey’s herbalist shop is a must, where possible, buy one of the many items or taste some of the local products. Then, visit to the village of Farfa, with its characteristic two-storey houses, where for centuries were housed the workshops of the artisans of the town.
The next day we will go to Castel di Tora, which until 1939 was a village voted to agriculture and sheep farming, but after the construction of the dam on the river Turano and the flooding of the valley now lies of fishing and tourism. We will make an excursion to the abandoned village of Antuni, visiting its castle and its ramparts, overlooking the lake. For groups over 6 people will be scheduled an excursion to the Nature Reserve of Navegna and Cervia Mountains.
Last stop of our tour is Collalto Sabino, inserted in 2002 in the list of “The most beautiful villages in Italy”. Once we will arrive in the village it almost seems to go back in time, feeling immersed in a medieval atmosphere, due to garrets, sentry posts, corner towers, but mainly thanks to its castle, which dominated the Piana del Cavaliere.
The tour will end here, where you are free to choose whether head back to the starting point or carry on with another tour.
The tour begins by immersing yourself in the atmosphere of the Roman history, then travelling to the medieval history of the Abbey of Farfa and the villages of Castel di Tora and Collalto Sabino, passing through the beauties of the Nature Reserve of the Navegna and Cervia Mountains, making several hikes along its paths.
