During this tour we show you some wonderful towns along the Ionian Coast of the Province of Reggio Calabria.
The first stop is the Villa Romana in Casignana, which dates back to 1st century AD, inhabited until the 5th century. The studies suggest that the thermal complex stretched, initially, over about 15 hectares. Today just about 8 hectares are discovered. We can admire rooms for cold and warm baths, with a heating system still visible nowadays and mosaics of rare beauty. On the opposite side of the Route 106 (which cuts in two the Villa Romana) it’s possible to see the residential area, with mosaics of the same efficiency.
On the way to Gerace we stop at the Archaeological site of Locri Epizephyrii. There are many paths to follow in order to admire the evidences of the Greek and Roman civilization. It was a very important centre for the political and economic life and it was abandoned by the Locresi at the beginning of the 10th century AD to escape from the Turkish incursions, even more intense.
Gerace is composed by three urban agglomerations well defined: the Borgo, with the farmers’ houses and the pottery workshops dug into the soft tufa; the Borghetto, where there is the Door of the Sun and the Belvedere, Three Churches Square (Saint Francis, Saint Giovannello and the Sacred Heart, all built with different architectural styles), but especially the Norman Cathedral, one of the most visited sites in Calabria, it is important either for the upper church divided into three naves thanks to columns coming from other sites in the Magna Grecia, or for the bottom part where you can admire the primitive church. Here are stored illuminated manuscripts by experts amanuenses; and the upper side, the Baglio, where still today it’s possible to see the ruins of the majestic castle (cornerstones of the drawbridge, the circular towers and some rooms), which dominated the valley below. The tour will finish with a tasting of typical products with the Greek wine of Gerace.
The tour will end here, you are free to choose whether head back to the starting place or carry on with another tour.
A tour on the Ionian coast to discover: an archaelogical site in part still undiscovered, the memories of one of the most powerful colonies of the Magna Graecia, a town, that seems suspended in time, with typical characteristics of Middle Ages.
