The tour The Nature of the Maremma begins in Grosseto. This is the most important city in the Maremma, that’s why sometimes it seems a bit chaotic and noisy, but Grosseto has a charm of its own. In particular, leaving the main roads in favor of the streets and alleys of the historical centre, you will find the characteristic clothing shops and the small trattorias.
After spending the morning discovering the centre of Grosseto, with its magnificent Cathedral and the fascinating archaeological museums, we spend the afternoon enjoying nature. Grosseto is very close the largest natural park in Maremma, the Parco dell’Uccellina. Inside the park you will have the opportunity to choose among various nature trails, to cover by walk or by bike, by canoe, by carriage or by horse, or relax on the beach. Before leaving this beautiful park though, do not miss the Maremmane cows and the traditional butteri (cowboys)!
At the end of the visit we head to Montemerano for the dinner and to spend the night.
In the second day, immediately after breakfast, we visit the village. Montemerano was recently included in the list of “The most beautiful village of Italy”, it is a treasure of medieval art and architecture and in the Church of San Giorgio, jewel of Romanesque art, are kept beautiful frescoes. The village surrounded by The Nature of the Maremma and protected by three walls, has kept intact the medieval appearance with the splendid church, the fortress, the paved street and the characteristic square of the castle surrounded by the stone buildings.
On the road again, a delicious lunch is waiting for us in one of the excellent restaurant of Manciano. This village is famous for the spectacular view from the Aldobrandeschi fortress. We visit the Museum of Prehistory and Protohistory, which has a beautiful multimedia set up.
We return to Montemerano and we meet to dine in a restaurant with typical cuisine.
The stages of the third day are: Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana, known as “Cities of the tuff” with its splendid Etruscan necropolis and the famous cave roads. Pitigliano with its suggestions of today’s medieval historic centre, with dense network of alleys, and the charm of its surroundings have made it a famous destination of international tourism, certified by its inclusion in the list of “The most beautiful villages of Italy”. Sorano is characterised by buildings that almost blend with the rock on which it is built. The village is surrounded by imposing valleys, where clear rivers flow, and there are numerous archaeological sites with incredible charm. For the high environmental quality excellent typical productions are born, deriving from the processing of these lands. Sovana still retains its ancient charm and splendour of a medieval village. It was born as a thriving Etruscan town, important city in Roman times, after being plundered and devastated by the Senesi in 1410, had the good fortune to arrive intact to the present day.
We arrive in Saturnia, check-in and dinner.
The fourth day is entirely dedicated to the Saturnia baths, a well-known city immersed in The Nature of the Maremma. It won’t be easy to decide whether to relax in the warm thermal waters at 37°C of the Falls of the Mill, with free entrance, or try the luxury of the spa, with swimming pools, sun loungers and umbrellas. The properties of its waters are healthy for the skin, the respiratory and musculoskeletal system. In the evening we go for a tasting in a cellar nor far from Saturnia.
The last day of the tour The Nature of the Maremma we head to the sea. This territory has many beautiful beaches and maritime tourist destinations. But none is richer and more interesting than Orbetello, the city on the lagoon, with its history and panoramic view, near the Argentario Coast.
In the morning we walk in one of the many trekking trails in the WWF Orbetello Lagoon Oasis, and after lunch we visit the port cities of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole. There is one beach for everyone: for swimming lovers, couples, families. Local prefer the Acqua Dolce (Fresh water) beach, just outside Porto Ercole.
We continue the tour to the Powder magazine Guzman, which today houses the Archaeological Museum and we end at the Spacco della Regina, an ancient Etruscan cut that remained intact.
In the evening we try one of the many seafood restaurants on the coast.
The next morning we can greet each other or you can choose to continue with another tour to discover other destinations of Tuscany or of Italy.
